Healthy Schools
As a district, we are committed to working with families to improve the health and well-being of our students.
A comprehensive Student Health and Wellness policy has been created with input from parents, teachers, administrators and health and nutrition experts. The policy provides information for staff and parents on a variety of wellness issues, including:
School Meals
- School meals will strictly comply with all federal, state and local regulations.
- All food and beverages served as part of school meals will be consistent with current USDA Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
- Nutritional information of school meals will be available to parents on the Internet or by contacting the Food Service office.
Physical Education
-
Opportunities for physical activity during and after school hours will be provided to students.
-
Staff will incorporate physical activity into other subject areas, as appropriate.
- The district's policy discourages the practice of withholding physical education as a consequence for misbehavior.
Snacks and celebrations
- The district's policy encourages students to eat fruits and vegetables as primary snacks and drink water as the primary beverage during the school day and in after-school activities.
- The policy encourages parents to send healthy foods or non-food items for student birthdays and classroom celebrations.
Nutrition Education
- Students will be provided the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and protect their own health.
- All schools will offer a health and nutrition curriculum, and will provide health-related activities in subjects such as math, science, languages arts, etc.
- The district's policy discourages the use of foods or beverages as rewards, and staff will not withhold food as consequences of misbehavior.
Fundraising
- The district's policy encourages the sale of non-food items during school-related fundraising activities.
- Where food is sold for fundraising, the policy discourages the sale of foods with minimal nutritional value.
The Forest Lake Area Schools’ Wellness Policy meets the requirements of the federal Child Nutrition and WIC Reauthorization Act of 2004.
