This sheet answers some of the most commonly asked questions by Southwest parents. But, most important, if you have any questions during this school year, don’t hesitate to contact us. We want to hear from you!
Activities Information: This information can be found on the Ranger’s website (rangers.flaschools.org). On this website, you will find schedule information, dates, fees and directions to away events. You must sign-up for all school sports online.
Advisor/Advisee: Advisory is a place to start our day, with an adult that we’ll see for the three years we attend Southwest. We take care of many ‘duties’ in Advisory, like collecting and distributing information. But it is also the place where we register for classes, get our thoughts and homework assignment organized for the day, and socialize with our fellow ‘advisory family’ members. This is also a place for an adult to become an advocate for their students that they have in their advisory. We also will be implementing Ramp-UP which is a college and career readiness program. Please feel free to contact your advisory teacher any time for any reason-if they can’t help you, they can direct you to someone who can!
Announcements: The monitors in classrooms are the primary source of information on activities and announcements that affect their school life. Other announcements are made to classes over the P.A. system, if necessary.
Building Security: After 7:36 all exterior doors are locked except Door #1. Door #1 is on the south side of the building.
Health Concerns: Medications are distributed through the Health Office at Southwest. Policy requires parents to bring all medication to school. Please call 982-8710 if you have any questions.
Homework Help Night: Homework help nights are scheduled each quarter to provide a time for students to stay after school and receive help from teachers. Students will work with their classroom teacher(s) from 2:15 pm to 3:15 pm. Students will then be in a teacher supervised study hall setting until 4:30 pm. Students can take the activity bus home or have a parent pick them up.
Internet Use: Just a reminder that parents are no longer required sending in a permission slip for Internet use. Instead, parents need to contact the school (Mr. Geary ) if they wish their son or daughter to be excluded from Internet use.
Late to School: Students are expected to be in class at 7:40 a.m. Students reporting to school after this time are to report directly to the office to sign in.
Lunch Money: Students are notified by the cashiers in the cafeteria when their account balance is $5.00 or less. Questions may be directed to the Supervisor of Food Services, Sari Alsaker, at 982-8752
Parents who drive their student to Southwest: Parents should drop off and pick-up students in the east parking lot. These students should use doors #7 or #8 to enter Southwest. Parents driving should enter and exit the parking lot through the north entrance. There is a lot of bus traffic before and after school. Buses use the south entrance when arriving at Southwest.
Requesting Homework: Teacher’s websites should be updated weekly. Any assignment that is handed out to students will be posted on the teacher’s website. If a student is absent, any missing assignment should be downloaded from the teacher’s website. The Southwest office will no longer coordinate and put together missing assignments for students.
School Rules/Policies: Students were given a copy of the district Code of Conduct at the beginning of the year. Students and advisory teachers have already gone over these policies during their advisory time at the beginning of the year.
SchoolView: SchoolView is an outstanding electronic tool to monitor your student’s school information. Everything from grades, report cards, transcripts, state and district test scores, attendance and disciplinary information can be found on this site. If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Kundel in the guidance office at 982-8704 or Kristi Guttormson in the main office at 982-8700.
Start times and bus schedules: Buses arrive at Southwest between 7:25 and 7:35 a.m. The day starts at 7:40 a.m. 7th period is over at 2:10. If you experience any difficulties with bus transportation, please call Transportation at 982-8190.
Students leaving school early: Students leaving school early should bring a note from their Parent/Guardian stating where they are going and what time they need to be dismissed. They will then be given a pass. You may also call the office to make arrangements.
Vacation policy: Hopefully, vacations won’t be scheduled during school time. But if there isn’t an alternative, students are to bring a note to the attendance secretary in the office. They will be given a form that is to be carried around to each of their teachers, who will note homework assignments and procedures for making up missed work.
Visiting SW: Parents are always welcome. It does help if you arrange for your visit ahead of time-simply call the school: 982-8700. Remember, only the front entrance (Door #1) will be open during the day. Please “check in” in the main office and receive a visitor pass before going anywhere else in the building. Students will not be allowed to have an outside visitor travel with them during the school day.
